February 23rd is National Dog Biscuit Day! In honor of today’s featured treat, we’ve found the best homemade dog treat recipes. Whether your pet has food allergies or is just plain picky, there’s something for every pooch.
1. Frozen Peanut Butter Pup Pops
This dog treat recipe comes from the Dog Whisperer himself! Perfect for a hot spring day, this snack is sure to cool down even the hottest dog.
Melt one cup of peanut butter in the microwave, then combine with 32oz of plain or vanilla yogurt. Pour the mixture into a muffin tin – be sure to use liners! – and freeze. So tasty, even you might try a bite.
2. Vegetarian Dog Biscuits
Veggies are good for pets, in small doses! This recipe for homemade dog treats is simple and nutritious.
Preheat the oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit; then mix the following: 2.5 cups flour, 3/4 cup dry milk powder, 1/2 cup vegetable oil, 2 tbsp brown sugar, 3/4 cup boiling water, an egg, and 1/2 cup carrots.
Roll into a dough ball, then flatten to a quarter inch thick. Use cookie cutters or a drinking glass to make your shapes! Bake your biscuits for 30 minutes.
3. Chicken Wild Rice Dog Treats
This treat adapted from Lola the Pitty‘s recipe is human- and dog-approved – chicken pleases pets, while parsley beats bad breath. This treat is also wheat- and gluten-free, depending on which type of rice you use.
First, preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Mix 1 cup mashed rice, 1 cup diced chicken, 3 tbsp rice flour, 1 tbsp fresh parsley and an egg. Add 1 tbsp dried parsley for a breath-freshening boo
Use an olive-oil based spray on a muffin tin to prevent treats from sticking. Then, fill the cups with your delicious mixture. Bake for 25 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool before serving!
4. Homemade Hamburger Patties
Barbecues are a dog’s greatest dream and worst nightmare – food everywhere, but not for Fido. Whip up a batch of these homemade dog treats before your next BBQ to keep your pet out of your grill.
Prep begins with preheating the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Next, cook 1 cup of lean ground beef; drain the grease, but set it aside for later.
Mix together the following in this order: 2 cups whole wheat flour and 2 tbsp parsley; 1 cup shredded cheddar and 1 cup cooked beef.
Lightly whisk an egg, then combine with 3/4 cup water and a 6oz can of tomato paste. Combine both your beef/flour and egg/tomato paste mixtures in a large bowl.
Use a nonstick spray on a cookie sheet, then roll and flatten patties onto it. Sprinkle on sesame seeds and bake patties for 20 minutes.
5. Peanut Butter Pupcakes
This dog cupcake recipe is originally from Urban Bliss Life, tested by her pup Kirby! Perfect for special occasions or birthdays, these “pupcakes” are pet-friendly and can be easily modified for food allergies.
Start by preheating your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Combine an egg, 1/4 cup peanut butter, 1/4 cup vegetable oil, 1/3 cup honey and 1 cup shredded carrots.
In a separate bowl, mix 1 cup whole wheat flour, 1 tsp baking soda and 1/3 cup quick oats. Add this mixture to the first, stirring until mixed well.
Place cupcake liners in a muffin tin, then fill the cups! Bake for 15-25 minutes until golden brown; use the toothpick test if you’re unsure.
For a final touch, frost with peanut butter and top with your choice of dog biscuit!
